Pune News: Government is looting the people! GST on society maintenance; Strong discontent among Pune residents, saying – now even survival is being taxed…
If the monthly maintenance charges for your flat exceed ₹7,500, then 18% GST will now be applicable. Pune residents have expressed strong dissatisfaction with this decision.
They argue that if the government is now imposing GST even on maintenance charges, then this isn’t just a GST – is it some kind of “Jihadi tax”? Are we now being taxed just for trying to survive? Will there be a tax on breathing oxygen next? Such strong words reflect the growing public anger.
However, the Directorate General of Press Relations and Information of the Ministry of Finance and Corporate Affairs has clarified that if the total turnover of a Residents Welfare Association (RWA) in a financial year does not exceed ₹20 lakhs, then even if the maintenance charge per member exceeds ₹7,500, registration and GST payment is not mandatory. Despite this, residents of Pune have still expressed discontent.
People say they already pay taxes for the facilities while paying maintenance. Now adding GST amounts to double taxation. Therefore, this decision should be withdrawn immediately. On the other hand, citizens argue that GST is not affordable for the common man – if we have to pay ₹7,500 or more monthly and then pay GST on top of it, the government is essentially looting the public.
If a housing society (RWA) has an annual turnover of more than ₹20 lakhs and an individual flat owner pays over ₹7,500 per month for maintenance, then GST at 18% will be applicable not just on the amount exceeding ₹7,500, but on the entire maintenance amount.
