Online Rent Agreement Now Accepted as Valid Address Proof for Vehicle Registration: Directive from Regional Transport Department

While registering a vehicle, some dealers were demanding a copy of police verification from tenants. However, since police verification is already integrated within the online registered rent agreement, the address mentioned in the agreement should be accepted as official proof. No additional address proof should be required. This directive has been issued by the Regional Transport Department, which will help tenants avoid unnecessary hurdles during vehicle registration.

The online rent agreement system is jointly managed by the Revenue and Home Departments. Since this information is made available through the CCTNS (Crime and Criminal Tracking Network System), local police stations already have access to details about tenants and landlords in their jurisdiction. Therefore, citizens are no longer required to physically visit the police station to provide this information — as clarified in a circular previously issued by the Director General of Police’s office.

However, despite this, some vehicle dealers were still insisting on police verification from tenants even when an online rent agreement was available.

In this context, the Association of Real Estate Agents met with Regional Transport Officer Ajit Shinde, and Deputy RTOs Sanjiv Bhor and Sanjay Sasane to discuss the inconvenience faced by customers. Association President Sachin Shingavi, along with Magardhwaj Kashid from Shivay Services, Yogesh Pampaliya, and other office-bearers, followed up on the issue. Following these discussions, the Regional Transport Department recently issued a directive stating:

While registering a vehicle, the process must follow the Central Motor Vehicle Rules. The address mentioned in the registered rent agreement should be considered valid proof. No other address proof should be demanded for vehicle registration. Additionally, proper scrutiny of registration documents submitted by dealers must be ensured.
