Stamp Paper Vendors Are Government Employees; Can Be Prosecuted for Corruption, Rules Supreme Court
In a recent hearing, the Supreme Court of India ruled that stamp paper vendors are to be considered government employees, and if they engage in corrupt practices, they can be prosecuted under the Prevention of Corruption Act.
The court stated that stamp vendors fall within the definition of “public servants” as per the Prevention of Corruption Act, 1988. Therefore, if any vendor is found involved in corruption, legal action under the said act can be initiated against them.
While delivering the verdict, the bench led by Justice J.B. Pardiwala observed that stamp vendors across the country perform significant public duties and receive remuneration from the government for those duties. Hence, without a doubt, they fall under the scope of Section 2(c)(i) of the PC Act as public servants.
